Texas Thistle (Cirsium texanum)
Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Water Requirements: Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established
Height: 2–6 feet
Bloom Time: Spring through early summer
Description:
A striking Texas native biennial with showy rose-purple flower heads that are highly attractive to native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Unlike many invasive thistles, Texas Thistle is a beneficial wildflower that also provides valuable seeds for songbirds, especially goldfinches. It is an excellent addition to native prairies, pollinator gardens, and naturalized landscapes.
Planting Tips:
- Plant in well-drained soil in full sun for best performance
- Water regularly until established, then only during extended drought
- Allow some flower heads to mature for reseeding and to provide food for birds
- Wear gloves when handling due to its spiny leaves
Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Fall through spring
Nativity to Texas: Yes
