  • Prairie Acacia (Acacia angustissima)

Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water Requirements: Low to Moderate

Height: 2–4 feet

Bloom Time: Summer

Description:
Prairie Acacia is a delicate, shrubby perennial native to Texas grasslands and prairies, recognized for its soft, fern-like foliage and fluffy, white spherical flowers that bloom in warm months. This nitrogen-fixing legume improves soil health and thrives in poor soils, making it ideal for restoration plantings and xeriscaping. The blooms attract native bees and butterflies, while the dense foliage provides habitat for beneficial insects.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant in well-drained soils; tolerates sandy or rocky conditions.

  • Space 18–24 inches apart in full sun or light shade.

  • Water to establish, then reduce frequency—drought-tolerant once mature.

  • Prune lightly in winter to encourage compact shape.

Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Fall or Early Spring

Nativity to Texas: Yes
