Purple Milkweed Vine (Matelea reticulata)

Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade

Water Requirements: Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established

Height/Length: 10–20 feet

Bloom Time: Late spring through summer

Description:
A vigorous native Texas vine with clusters of small, star-shaped purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. As a host plant for the Monarch butterfly and Queen butterfly, it plays an important role in supporting native butterfly populations. Twining stems quickly climb fences, trellises, and arbors, making it an excellent choice for wildlife and pollinator gardens.

Planting Tips:

  • Provide a trellis, fence, or other support for climbing
  • Plant in well-drained soil
  • Water regularly until established, then only during extended dry periods
  • Cut back in late winter if needed to control size

Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Fall through spring

Nativity to Texas: Yes
