  • Frog Fruit (Phyla nodiflora)
Also known as Texas Turkey Tangle or Creeping Frogfruit

Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water Requirements: Low to Moderate

Height: 2–4 inches (can spread several feet)

Bloom Time: Spring through Fall

Description:
Frog Fruit is a fast-spreading, low-growing Texas native groundcover with small, purple and white clustered flowers that bloom profusely from spring to fall. It forms a dense mat of green foliage, making it excellent for replacing turf, filling between stepping stones, or stabilizing soil. The flowers attract butterflies, including the Phaon Crescent and White Peacock, for which it serves as a larval host plant.

Planting Tips:

  • Thrives in well-drained soil and adapts to poor or compacted areas.

  • Water regularly until established; drought-tolerant afterward.

  • Can tolerate light foot traffic, making it ideal for walkways.

  • Mow or trim occasionally to maintain desired spread and density.

Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Spring or Fall

Nativity to Texas: Yes
