Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water Requirements: Low

Height: 3-5 feet

Bloom Time: Summer to Fall

Description:
Flame Acanthus, also known as Wright’s Mexican Flame, is a hardy, drought-tolerant shrub that produces striking tubular red to orange flowers from summer through fall. This Texas native is highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, providing a valuable nectar source during the hottest months of the year. Its slender, green leaves add texture to landscapes, and the plant’s ability to thrive in dry, rocky soils makes it a fantastic choice for xeriscaping.

Planting Tips:

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil.
  • Light: Grows best in full sun but tolerates partial shade.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; water sparingly.
  • Pruning: Cut back in late winter or early spring to encourage dense, bushy growth.
  • Cold Hardiness: Can die back in extreme cold but typically returns in spring.

Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Spring or Early Fall

Nativity to Texas: Yes

Additional Notes:
Flame Acanthus is deer-resistant and makes an excellent addition to pollinator gardens, wildlife habitats, and low-maintenance landscapes. It thrives in tough conditions, providing a long-lasting display of fiery blooms throughout the warm seasons.
