Water Requirements: Moderate; keep soil consistently moist but well-drained
Height: 10-30 feet (vine)
Bloom Time/Harvest Time: Summer to Early Fall
Description:
Loofah, also known as sponge gourd, is a vigorous climbing vine that produces long, green fruits. When harvested young, the fruits can be eaten like zucchini, but when left to mature, they develop a fibrous interior that is used as a natural sponge. This heat-loving plant thrives in warm climates and requires a long growing season. Its yellow flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it beneficial for garden biodiversity.
Planting Tips:
- Start seeds indoors or sow directly after the last frost.
- Provide a sturdy trellis or support for the vines to climb.
- Harvest young for culinary use or allow fruits to dry on the vine for sponges.
Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Spring
