Comfrey
- Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)
Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Water Requirements: Moderate to High
Height: 2–4 feet
Bloom Time: Late Spring to Early Summer
Description:
Comfrey is a hardy, deep-rooted perennial herb known for its large, hairy leaves and bell-shaped purple, blue, or pink flowers. It’s treasured in permaculture and regenerative gardening for its ability to mine nutrients from deep in the soil and bring them to the surface. Comfrey leaves break down quickly and make an excellent mulch or compost activator, and the plant is often used in herbal salves and teas (though internal use is debated). It also attracts pollinators and beneficial insects to the garden.
Planting Tips:
-
Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil.
-
Space 2–3 feet apart to accommodate spreading growth.
-
Cut leaves regularly to use as mulch or compost—grows back fast.
-
Deep roots make it drought-resistant once established but keep it well-watered for lush growth.
