Buffalograss (Bouteloua dactyloides)
Sun Requirements: Full sun
Water Requirements: Very low; highly drought tolerant once established
Height: 4–8 inches (up to 12 inches with seed heads)
Bloom Time: Late spring through summer
Description:
A warm-season native Texas prairie grass that forms a soft, dense turf with minimal maintenance. Buffalograss thrives in heat, poor soils, and drought, making it an excellent choice for low-water lawns, native landscapes, and prairie restorations. Its fine texture provides habitat for beneficial insects while requiring far less mowing and irrigation than traditional turf grasses.
Planting Tips:
- Plant in full sun and well-drained soil
- Water regularly until established, then only during prolonged drought
- Mow infrequently or leave unmowed for a natural prairie appearance
- Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage weeds
Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Spring through early summer
Nativity to Texas: Yes
