  • Mexican Plum (Prunus mexicana)

Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water Requirements: Low to Moderate

Height: 15–35 feet

Bloom Time: Late Winter to Early Spring

Description:
Mexican Plum is a striking native tree celebrated for its early white blossoms that appear before the leaves, attracting bees and other pollinators at the start of the growing season. Its fragrant flowers are followed by small edible plums that ripen to purple and can be enjoyed by wildlife or used for jellies and preserves. With attractive gray bark that peels to reveal reddish underlayers, this deciduous tree adds four-season interest and supports local ecosystems.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant in well-drained soil with good air circulation.

  • Space with room for mature height and spread.

  • Water deeply during establishment, then occasionally during dry spells.

  • Prune lightly in winter to shape and remove deadwood.
