Description:
Christmas Cactus is a beloved tropical houseplant known for its arching stems and stunning tubular flowers in shades of pink, red, white, or purple that bloom during the holiday season. Unlike desert cacti, it hails from Brazilian rainforests and prefers humid, shaded conditions. Its nectar-rich flowers attract hummingbirds in their native habitat, and with the right care, it can rebloom annually for decades, often becoming a family heirloom.
Planting Tips:
-
Use a well-draining potting mix (cactus or succulent mix with added organic matter).
-
Place in bright, indirect light—avoid harsh direct sun.
-
Water regularly during active growth, reducing in fall to encourage bud set.
-
Provide 12–14 hours of darkness and cooler nights in fall to trigger blooming.
-
After blooming, prune lightly to shape and encourage branching.
Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Spring (as a houseplant, it can be grown year-round indoors)
