  • Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides)

Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Water Requirements: Low to Moderate
Height: 2–4 feet
Harvest Time: 50–60 days for young leaves

Description:
Epazote is a pungent, aromatic herb native to Central and South America and naturalized throughout parts of Texas. Traditionally used in Mexican cuisine, especially in bean dishes to reduce gas and add flavor, Epazote also has a long history of medicinal use. Its jagged, dark green leaves release a strong scent when crushed. While useful in moderation, large quantities should be avoided due to the presence of potent essential oils.

Planting Tips:

  • Prefers well-drained soil and tolerates poor soil conditions.

  • Self-seeds readily, so deadhead flowers if you wish to control spread.

  • Harvest young leaves before flowering for best flavor.

Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Spring

Nativity to Texas: Naturalized (not native but established)
