  • Fall Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium)

Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water Requirements: Low to Moderate; very drought-tolerant once established

Height: 18–24 inches

Bloom Time: Fall

Description:
Fall Aster is a beloved Texas native perennial prized for its abundant late-season blooms that blanket the plant in violet-purple daisies with bright yellow centers. Its aromatic foliage, compact mounding habit, and exceptional heat tolerance make it a standout in any Texas garden. As one of the final nectar sources of the year, Fall Aster plays a vital ecological role—supporting migrating Monarchs, native bees, and countless beneficial pollinators when few other plants are blooming. Tough, reliable, and easy to grow, it thrives in rocky soils, poor soils, and drought conditions while returning year after year.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant in well-drained soil; thrives in rocky or sandy sites.

  • Cut back by one-third in midsummer to maintain a dense, mounded shape.

  • Water regularly during establishment, then sparingly.

  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigor.

Ideal Season for Planting in Texas: Fall or Early Spring
