Description: The Sandpaper Tree, also known as Anacua or Knockaway, is a native Texas tree known for its rough, sandpaper-like leaves and clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer. The tree produces small, orange to yellow berries that attract birds and other wildlife. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and is commonly used in xeriscaping and native plant landscapes.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant in well-drained soil.
  • Space trees about 15-20 feet apart to allow for mature growth.
  • Water regularly during the first year to establish deep roots, then reduce watering as the tree matures.
  • Prune to shape in late winter or early spring.
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
